The Lawrence F. Flick Memorial Center
for the Treatment of Tuberculosis was dedicated on Friday, June
19, 1998 at City Hall. |
The center functions as an
arm of the TB Control Program of the City of Philadelphia Department
of Public Health. Patients with resistant strains of tuberculosis,
medically complex conditions, and limited access to care are
managed at the center, which is located at 305 S. 13th Street,
adjacent to the Directly Observed Therapy Center. |
Dr. Flick in whose memory
the center is dedicated, practiced medicine in Philadelphia from
the late 1800s until his death in 1937. During that time, he
devoted his life to the treatment of tuberculosis. He was internationally
recognized as an innovator and leader in the field. Dr. Flick
founded the White Haven Sanatorium and was instrumental in dramatically
reducing the number of cases and deaths attributable to tuberculosis.
Members of Dr. Flick's family, the public heath and medical communities
gathered to honor his memory and to re-dedicate ourselves to
his purpose - the eradication of tuberculosis. |
