The Neonatology Practice

The Obstetrical, Perinatal and Neonatal Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) has 14 labor and delivery rooms as well as facilities for delivery and resuscitation of high-risk infants. There is also a 36-bed Intensive Care Nursery providing tertiary level care to newborn infants. There are approximately 3,800 deliveries per year with a high-risk perinatal service serving the high-risk community surrounding the Hospital as well as high-risk referral patients. This unit has an active clinical research program with research nurses as part of the Children's Hospital GCRC Satellite. Coverage is provided by members of the Division of Neonatology together with residents from Children's Hospital's Pediatric Residency Training Program as well as University of Pennsylvania medical students. Consultations by subspecialists at Children's Hospital are provided in the unit, but infants requiring complex surgery generally are transferred to Children's Hospital; an underground tunnel connects the two hospitals.
