MODERN MEDICINE

Below, an illustration of vessels used as pharmaceutical apparatus from The New Dispensatory: containing the Elements of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the Materia Medica published by W. Lewis, Edinburgh 1786 -- an outstanding book from the Historic Library.

Important works of medicine are well represented at Pennsylvania Hospital. Early editions of Vesalius, Morgagni, Harvey, and Pare, to name just a few, can be found in the Historic Library.

At right, engraved portrait of Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), the great anatomist and author of the first complete textbook of human anatomy, De Humanis Corporis Fabrica (a copy of which is held by the Historic Library).
