Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride

Dr. Thomas Story Kirkbride was the first Superintendent of the Pennsylvania Hospital for the Insane, later known as the Institute of the Pennsylvania Hospital. Dr. Kirkbride was a strong advocate for humane treatment of the mentally ill, an idea which gained in popularity throughout the 19th Century. He remained the psychiatrist-in-chief of the asylum for 43 years, until his death in 1883. (Image #2424)
