BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES

As the nation's first hospital, Pennsylvania Hospital was also the first to treat the mentally ill. The charter granted in 1751 establishing the hospital included a provision for the treatment of "lunaticks or Persons distemper'd in Mind." From this beginning, Pennsylvania Hospital has long been a leader and innovator in the treatment of the mentally ill.

For a complete history of the hospital's behavioral health programs, please read about the History of The Institute of Pennsylvania Hospital.
