As the nation's first hospital,
Pennsylvania Hospital was also the first to treat the mentally
ill. The charter granted in 1751
establishing the hospital included a provision for the treatment
of "lunaticks or Persons distemper'd in Mind." From
this beginning, Pennsylvania Hospital has long been a leader
and innovator in the treatment of the mentally ill.
