The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the University of Pennsylvania continues to be one of the most innovative and respected departments in the country. With historical beginnings under the leadership of Robert Dripps, The Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care has a long record of both clinical and academic excellence.

This site provides patients, healthcare providers and business managers a place to learn more about non-operating room anesthesia and the healthcare implications. Classically, anesthesia has been provided in operating room (OR) settings, but as there is a shift from surgeries to procedures there has been a desire for the safety and efficiency of anesthesia care outside of the OR. Given this paradigm shift, many people are not familiar with the intricacies that come with providing anesthesia care outside of the OR setting, but the content contained in this site hopes to close this knowledge gap.
