Section I, Series
10. Pennsylvania Hospital Nursing Collection, 1876-1995.
History of the Pennsylvania Hospital School of
Nursing, Papers, 1884-1980, ( MG 3.1,
Boxes 1-7)
Although a training school for nurses was first suggested
at a Contributor’s Meeting in 1866, it was not until
1878 that arrangements were made to take student nurses. Anne
R. Bunting was the first Nursing Supervisor, followed by Lucy
Walker, who served from 1895-1907.
This series contains letters to the Board of Managers from
candidates for the Supervisor’s position from 1888-1895.
Other early documents include a 1908 annual report. This document
gives an overview of the early years of the school and provides
a list of students. This report, along with two broadsides
from the school’s early days entitled “Standing
Orders for Day Nurses” and “Rules for Nurses,”
provides insight into the life and duties of the turn-of-the
century nurse.
- Boxes 2 and 3 are papers collected by Helen G. McClelland,
who served as Director of Nursing from 1933-1956. These
papers include correspondence and reports from the Committee
on Nursing in 1886, and an 1899 roster of lectures to be
delivered to the Nurses Training School by Pennsylvania
Hospital medical staff members. Reminiscences from numerous
nursing school alumnae and medical staff offer insights
into the early practice of medicine.
- Box 4 contains papers related to the Nursing School from
Daniel Test, Superintendent; Charles Evans, Board of Managers;
Jane Haling Farguiel, Class of 1941; and Dolores Ziff, Director
of Public Relations.
- Box 5 contains articles and bibliographies, as well as
materials related to the history of Blockley Hospital and
its nursing school, which later became Philadelphia General
Hospital.
- Box 6 includes booklets and publications collected by
Lucy D. Germain dating from 1940 to 1977 on the history
of nursing and the history of the Pennsylvania Hospital
School of Nursing.
- Box 7 provides historic photographs and images depicting
the nursing school’s educational, clinical and recreational
activities. Class photographs date from c.1880 to 1972.
