5. Lantern Slides.
There are approximately 650 lantern slides in the collection.
Many of the images in this series can also be found in Series
1, Series 7, and Series 8. This series has been divided
into eight subseries, which include:
Subseries A: Buildings,
1751-1950s
(earliest dates refer to the dates of engravings themselves, not the photographs
of the engravings)
Internal and external aspects of Hospital property. Showcases the variant architecture
and grounds of the Hospital. Includes numerous images of some of the most highly
recognizable Hospital buildings, such as the Pine Building.
Subseries B: Departments & Procedures,
c.1880s-1890s, 1927
Images of Outpatient Clinics and Surgery.
Subseries C: Informational,
1953-1965 + [n.d.]
Pharmaceutical / Drug , Psychiatric, and miscellaneous hospital information
typewritten and presented in lantern slide format. Most of these slides were
used in the past in presentations.
Subseries D: Instruments/
Artifacts, 1751-1930s + [n.d.]
Photographs of some of the artifacts housed in the Hospital’s Historic
Collections.
Subseries E: Paintings/
Artwork, c.1700s, 1843 + [n.d.]
(earliest dates represent the date of the paintings not of the slides)
Images of painted portraits and other artwork.
Subseries F: People, 1806-1920s
(earliest date represents date of drawing, not of the photo of the drawing)
Portraits of groups and individuals who were part of the Hospital’s history.
Nursing school class photos, staff portraits, and resident groups are among
the most notable images in this subseries.
Subseries G: Transportation,
1927
Images of the Hospital’s automobile ambulance service.
Subseries H: Miscellaneous,
c.1860s + [n.d.]
Items that are part of the collection, but which do not easily fit into one
of the aforementioned subseries. Includes slides unrelated to the Pennsylvania
Hospital specifically, but which generally relate to the history of nursing
and medicine.
